Choosing a Major

The choice of a major is not something to consider lightly. Whether you are thinking about coming to Moody and looking at our different majors or you are currently a student and desiring to change majors, the Career Center can help you evaluate your options and make an informed decision for your future. The key is that this is an informed decision. Getting input from just your roommate is not making the most informed decision.

Step 1: Start With Your Interests

This decision should start with you and what interests you. We are assuming that prayer and right fellowship with Christ are already part of this decision. With that assumption, God may be directing you through your interest in a certain topic. Just because you have an interest in something, does not mean that God cannot be behind it.

Step 2: Seek Godly Council

When seeking advice, you should engage with two types of people. First, talk with those who you consider wise and know you well. They should confirm or deny your pursuit of particular interest.

Next, talk with someone who is doing what interests you. Speaking to someone in your interested field helps to give you an idea of what the work is like and what is involved in getting into that field, giving you a sense of reality. If you do not know someone like this, contact the Career Center at patrick.friedline@moody.edu, and we may be able to help connect you with someone.

Step 3: Research Programs and Courses

With your interests solidified, look through the academic catalog at different programs and their classes to see which program would help prepare you best for that type of work. The Associate Dean of Career Development can also help with sorting out which major would fit best with that interest. You may want to compare two programs side-by-side to see which one has more classes that you would like to take. Maybe an Interdisciplinary program would fit your needs best.

Step 4: Make It Official

The process of changing a major begins in at Moody Central, located on the 2nd floor of Culbertson Hall. Their phone number is (312) 329-2020. Moody Central has forms and instructions to guide you through this process.

Changing Your Major

  1. Visit Academic Records and get the “Request for Change of Major” form. For the Undergraduate form, click here. For MTS students, click here.
  2. Changing majors is campus-specific, so be sure to select the correct form.
