  • September 29, 2016

On June 30, 2016 Awana Clubs International announced they have appointed Valerie (Burton) Bell '70 as their new CEO. She brings a lifetime of advocacy for children through her writing and speaking. Valerie has authored several books on family and children including Nobody's Children, Getting Out of Your Kids' Faces and Into Their Hearts and Faith-Shaped Kids. As CEO of Awana, Valerie will steward the high-level ministry direction for the children of the world.

Since 2011 the ministry of Awana has grown from 1 million children to 3.5 million children becoming the global leader in child discipleship. Partnering with 35,000 churches in 116 countries worldwide, Awana equips parents, volunteers and church leaders to teach kids everywhere to know, love and serve Jesus.

Valerie brings an extensive background in leadership. As part of the leadership team at The Chapel of the Air radio broadcast, she produced the daily program and helped lead the 50-Day Spiritual Adventure. She has spent the past 10 years serving in boards including chairing the MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) board.

Valerie is married to Steve Bell '70, her Moody Bible Institute sweetheart, who is the Executive Vice President of the Willow Creek Association where he oversees the Global Leadership Summit. They have two grown sons, Brendan and Justin and 5 grandchildren.
